Isaac Gulliver - King of the Dorset Smugglers

Our speaker today Richard Hutley

The last line to the chorus of Kipling’s “A Smuggler’s Song” positively reeks with menace. “Watch the wall my Darling while the Gentlemen go by”. It paints a marvellous picture of a parent whispering to a young child disturbed in the night by the sound of horses. It also provides a glimpse of the dangerous and secretive world of Smugglers in 18th century England. Smugglers were armed and, if confronted by the King’s Revenue men, lives were often lost on both sides. Capture always resulted in the most severe penalties.

This is the story of Isaac Gulliver - King of the Dorset Smugglers
