In alternate years the Lentune Probus Ladies and Gentlemen’s clubs attend each other’s meetings on just one occasion. And today it was the turn of the Lentune Ladies to host the joint meeting, attended by a total of 54 members.

Our speaker today was Christchurch-based Steve Roberts, who told the fascinating story of Harry Selfridge, the flamboyant and visionary US retail entrepreneur and founder of the Oxford Street store in London that bears his name.

It was a “rags to riches and back” story, as dramatized in the TV series Mr Selfridge (2013-2016). In his amusing talk, Steve contrasted the real-life story of Harry Selfridge with the version portrayed on TV. There were many differences.

After an enjoyable lunch and much conversation members eventually left, many planning to watch the Mr Selfridge series again!
