NFDC is to revise local place and building names linked to slavery, colonialism and racism. One street name under immediate threat is Nelson Place, Lymington.

Nelson Place was originally named after our national hero. However, during his lifetime Nelson expressed support for slave owners and opposed the abolitionist movement of William Wilberforce.

There is absolutely no justification in the proposal to rename Nelson Place as "Wilberforce Plaza", to placate the whims of woke campaigners.

Political correctness is setting a dangerous precedent and could destabilise the peace of our little Georgian town. Yes - let’s recognise our mansions were built on wealth plundered from cotton plantations, naval looting and ‘prize money’. Yes - working conditions in Saltern boiler houses were atrocious.

Lymington may have a less than glorious past. But let’s leave it at that - history
