The recent furore regarding women becoming members of the Garrick Club has raised the question of whether women can become members of Probus clubs in the U.K..
Probus club membership was originally restricted to men: retired and semi-retired professionals and businessmen. Women were excluded.
In recent years the role and influence of women in society has changed dramatically. Previously restricted to homemaking and raising families, women have become increasingly involved in business and the professions. Indeed, some women are now leaders in their profession or business sector.
Most Probus clubs have reacted to this change by inviting the wives and partners of members to occasional joint meetings and social events. Some clubs have established a separate ladies club for the wives, partners and widows of former members. A few clubs have welcomed both men and women into membership of the same club.
Lentune Probus Club has separate clubs for men and women. Each club has a committee that organises monthly meetings. And the two committees jointly organise our annual programmes of social events, sporting events, luncheons and a club holiday for members. The two clubs also share our website.
Separate clubs for men and women members plus a joint annual programme of social events is what our members want. And this is what Lentune Probus Club proudly delivers.
