Lentune Probus Ladies Club met today and enjoyed a truly nostalgic look at children’s programmes from the past, by John Lay Flurrie.

Children’s Hour started on radio in 1922, lasting until 1964, and Walt Disney introduced Mickey Mouse and the first merchandising in 1928. Many of us remembered Educating Archie, with Peter Brough and Archie Andrews on the Light Programme.

After the hiatus in broadcasting during the war we saw Muffin the Mule in 1946, Watch with Mother included Bill and Ben, The Woodentops and Andy Pandy from 1950 and Sooty and Sweep with Soo from 1955.

There was mention of the Magic Roundabout, Basil Brush, Rod Hull and Emu, Bagpuss, the Clangers, Thomas the Tank Engine and Postman Pat, Thunderbirds, Twizzle and Stingray.

Pelham Puppets were every child’s dream and began in 1947.

We saw Wallace and Gromit, How, Crackerjack, Animal Magic and Blue Peter. This became the world’s longest running children’s programme and is still showing after 60 years.

What a race through our childhoods. A great morning was had by all.

John Lay Flurrie ended by telling us about the Honeypot Children’s Charity which will receive his speaker’s fee. They offer support for young carers in the form of respite breaks and care.

Following this fascinating talk, the ladies enjoyed a good lunch with discussion of their personal favourite programmes from all that time ago.
