11 members of Lentune Probus visited to the RNLI boatbuilding factory in Poole - the All-weather Lifeboat Centre.

We arrived to enjoy refreshments in the stunning restaurant and lounge area overlooking Poole Harbour. The RNLI is a registered Charity and had never received contributions from government, so it has always retained its independence. 2024 was the 200th Anniversary of the RNLI. Our guide explained  how today it cost £240 million each year to run the operation across England, Scotland and Ireland.

We  toured the two manufacturing and refurbishing plants, where we saw the intricate and skilled work carried out by the ship builders of the latest ‘Shannon’ class of boat being made. All boats in the RNLI fleet are named after rivers.

We were guided around the two plants observing the construction of the Lifeboats from the fibreglass and foam compounds being moulded together and then through into the assembling plant to see the finished product - a fully self-righting lifeboat.  Because of the complexity of the boats, the RNLI only manufacture four a year but refurbish and repair many others.

After this really enjoyable tour we were offered the opportunity to have lunch in the restaurant.
